Why digital forensics? When I tell people I am a Certified Digital Forensic Examiner the first thing they ask me is…”what is that”? It’s very simple. It is investigating computers and mobile devices to find various types of evidence. Your devices hold an enormous amount of digital evidence and electronic footprints. You would be surprised at how a Digital Forensic expert can trace various of steps and patterns on an electronic device. I love to see how people react when i tell them “let me try your phone.” That statement is usually met with a huge NO! It doesn’t necessarily mean there is something illegal going on but there is a lot of personal information on a persons electronic device.

Why Digital Forensics?

Because digital forensics can be helpful in so many ways. It’s not just to catch someone doing something but a way of finding out what happened in various instances. For example; if there is a data breach, you want to be able to prove that you know exactly when, why, how and where the attack came into your network. Digital forensics can help you gather all that information and help you prove that you have investigated the breach and you are 100% sure nothing is lingering on the computer. That is very important, especially if you are reporting to HHS for a HIPAA breach.

Digital forensics can also be fun, and a very lucrative career path. With today’s cyber world, digital forensics is becoming more and more important in understanding how hackers try to get into your systems and how to avoid them. To be a Certified Digital Forensic Examiner, you will need to understand the file structures and how to trace various attacks. It’s actually pretty fascinating. I enjoy it!
