Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning are processes that help medical practices and hospitals prepare for disruptive events—whether an event might be a hurricane or simply a power outage caused by a backhoe in the parking lot. Management’s involvement in this process can range from overseeing the plan, to providing input and support, to putting the plan into action during an emergency. Are you ready for this? If not, it is not hard to prepare. It involves some documentation of a well thought out process, and some testing. The work involved in the front end, will save you so much if you really have to implement your business continuity and disaster recovery plan.
Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
Some of the information in your plan, will encompass how employees will communicate. Who will call who? Where will they go and how will they keep doing their jobs? The details will vary greatly depending on the size and scope of the practices. Some practices may simply see patients in a colleagues office. If so, how will inform the patients? How will you inform the staff/ How will you get the information into the patients chart? How will you bill for your services, fill prescriptions, handle emergencies, etc. There is a lot to think about, but you certainly don’t want to think about your business continuity and disaster recovery plan in the middle of a disaster!
Pre planning is the key. Plan for your system outages. Test your backups. Document exactly how you will get your EMR up and running, and how you will see your patients. A crisis is not the time to plan what you are going to do.
